Bahman Jalali

born 1945 in Teheran

Bahman Jalali died on January 15, 2010. He had already made his choice of photographs for the exhibition at the Villa Romana. His wife Rana Javadi was guest artist at Villa Romana in June and July 2010.


Biography

Bahman Jalali was a self-taught photographer. In 1974, he followed his studies in economics with a two-year working stay in England, where he joined the Royal Society of Photographers. From 1976 to 1991, he was the director of the photography department at Sourosh Press and from 1997 to 2000, he worked as a founding member, advisor and curator of the first photography museum in Iran, Aks Khaneh Shahr. Since 1999, Bahman Jalali has also been a member of the editorial board of Aksnameh, a quarterly photography magazine. As well as teaching at Iranian universities, which he has been doing for more than 25 years, he is also sought-after as a judging panel member for various photography competitions in Iran and abroad. His own works have been shown in many national and international exhibitions. In 2009, he was awarded the Spectrum photography prize of the Foundation of Lower Saxony and, in 2011, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover
