SÜDEN

Villa Romana: Art, Music & Performance
Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Berlin

exhibition views and performances

A diverse two-week event program and an exhibition entitled SÜDEN (South) are bringing the Villa Romana to Berlin, with a broad spectrum of films, lectures, music, and performances. The common denominator of all of the contributions is a link to the artists’ house in Florence. And the Villa Romana Fellows for 2013 – Shannon Bool, Mariechen Danz, Heide Hinrichs, and Daniel Maier-Reimer – are presenting their work.

Berlin-based Canadian artist Shannon Bool (born 1972) grapples with cliches, standards, and ideals of female sensuality. Berlin-based Irish artist Mariechen Danz (born 1980) has conquered the international art world with her body - sculptures, installations, videos, and performances. The Deutsche Bank KunstHalle is exhibiting her Learning Cube: a giant cube covered in illustrations of human organs, hands, pyramids, and letters. In her minimalist object installations Heide Hinrichs (born 1976) examines the significance of everyday events and questions the relationship between body, architecture, and space. Daniel Maier-Reimer (born 1968) travels through regions of the world that lie along topographically fixed lines, such as rivers and national borders. His diverse impressions are often condensed into a single photograph.

Accompanying the exhibition is an extensive program of film, music, lectures, and workshops presenting a series of artists as well as theater and performance groups that are connected with the Villa Romana. Among these is the renowned Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards (Pontedera, Italy), which conceived a n homage to Allen Ginsberg especially for the KunstHalle. The performance group Kinkaleri (Prato, Italy) honors William S. Burroughs with Fourthousand | All!. In addition, the KunstHalle presents daily lectures, artists’ talks, and an extensive film program. The program conclueds with the performance Heiße Füsse by Wichtel und die Wuchteln, whose members include Ingrid and Oswald Wiener.
