I love to play music which lifts me up in another dimension. One that makes me dizzy and creates an imbalance for all who have the patience to listen to it. A concert can be a very interesting perceptive experience when the music becomes an extraordinary medium to transmit these sensations. For a few years now I have been fascinated by music which generates with repetition - simply Loops4ever, but as well its antipode, Drones4ever. No compromise between black and white. No pastel colours. Only a thick layer of oil paint."

Manuel Zurria, was born in Sicily in 1962 and has lived in Rome since 1980. He has worked and collaborated with some of the most important italian composers such as Francesco Pennisi, Adriano Guarnieri, Sylvano Bussotti, Aldo Clementi, Franco Donatoni, Luca Francesconi and Salvatore Sciarrino. Recently he has worked with Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Gavin Bryars, Giya Kancheli, Kaija Saariaho, Toshio Hosokawa, Alvin Curran and Frederic Rzewski on portrait concerts. Strongly attracted by minimalism, at the beginning of 2008 a triple CD entitled REPEAT! - released by the italian label DIE SCHACHTEL - shows the result of the experiments that he has carried out in the last few years, and includes original and transcribed pieces for flute in collaboration with musicians such as Arvo Pärt, Alvin Lucier, Louis Andriessen, Luc Ferrari, Tom Johnson and many others. The album received outstandingly positive feedback from the international press. Zurria has been invited to international Festivals of contemporary music like the Venice Music Biennale, Pacific Music Festival – Sapporo (Japan), Festival Musica Strasbourg, Beethovenhalle - Bonn, Settembre Musica – Torino, De Yisbreker - Amsterdam, IRCAM - Festival Agorà - Paris, Festival d'Automne - Paris, Rikskonserter - Stockholm, Illkhom Theatre (Tashkent-Uzbekistan), Takefu Festival – Japan, Akademie der Kunste - Berlin,Maerz Musik – Berlin, Festival Archipel - Geneve, NUMUS - Aarhus, ULTIMA - Oslo, Ensem - Valencia, Wien Modern and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. In 1990 he was among the founders of Alter Ego. His discography includes recordings for BMG-Ricordi, Capstone Records, EdiPan, Stradivarius, Die Schachtel and Touch. In 2009 the hungarian label BMC released NIAGARA, a portrait CD with László Sáry's works played by Zurria with overdubbing tracks.
James Saunders is a composer and has been working on an extended modular composition, #[unassigned], since 2000. He is Head of Centre for Musical Research at Bath Spa University, where he directs the AHRC-funded research project Words and Music, and runs the experimental music ensemble Material. From late 2008 he has begun developing other series of pieces and distributed work. His music has been played at numerous international festivals, including Bludenz Tage fur Zeitgenössiche Musik, Brighton Festival, BMIC Cutting Edge, Darmstadt, Donaueschingen, Gothenburg Arts Sounds, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Inventionen Berlin, The Kitchen, Music We'd Like to Hear, Ostrava New Music Days, Rational Rec, Roaring Hooves, Ultima, and Wittener Tage fur Neue Kammermusik. It has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Resonance FM (UK), WDR3 and SWR2 (Germany), and national radio in Czech Republic, Norway, Italy, New Zealand, and Sweden. In 2003 and 2007 he held residencies at the Experimental Studio fur Akustiche Kunst in Freiburg. James has worked with Apartment House, asamisimasa, Sebastian Berweck, ensemble chronophonie, duo Contour, Rhodri Davies, Nicolas Hodges, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, plus minus ensemble, Psappha, ensemble recherche, SUONO MOBILE, and 175 East. As a performer he plays in the duo Parkinson Saunders with composer Tim Parkinson, Apartment House, and has also performed with Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolff and Phill Niblock. He has been commissioned by SWR for a new piece for the Radio Sinfonieorchester and Sylvain Cambreling for Donaueschingen in 2010. A CD version of #[unassigned] played by Apartment House is available on the confront label. His edited book The Ashgate Research Companion to Experimental Music was published in August 2009, and a Word Events (with John Lely) will be published by Continuum in 2011.
