Wafa Hourani, born in 1979 in Hebron, reflects, with subversive imagination, upon the repressive working and living conditions in Palestine in his sculptural, photographic and cinematic works. In the group of works “Future Cities” (2007) he examines the genre of utopian architectural models and creates scenarios such as how a Palestinian camp near the Ramallah checkpoint may look in 50 years.

Last year, Wafa Hourani was a guest artist at the Delfina studios in London and was invited to the Festival of International New Drama at the Berlin Schaubühne theatre with his performance “The Lions of Ramallah”. This year he is exhibiting at the Saatchi Gallery in London and is represented at the Istanbul Biennale (2009), the Berlin Biennale (2010) and the Asian Art Biennale in Dhaka, Bangladesh (2010).

Villa Romana had asked Catherine David, chief curator of the Direction des Musées de France (French Museums Board) and artistic director of “documentaX”, to nominate two guest artists for 2009 from the southern Mediterranean area for a two-month stay each in Villa Romana. The addition of international guest artists will continue in 2010.
