Bahman Jalali and Rana Javadi at the National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC

The National Museum of Asian Art in Washington presents the first US museum retrospective of the photographic work of Bahman Jalali and Rana Javadi.

Bahman Jalali was proposed by Cathérine David as an international guest artist for Villa Romana in 2009. His sudden death meant that only Rana Javadi came to Florence in 2010 and among other things, the exhibition Baman Jalali - Excerpts from a Lifework. Photography in Iran 1966 - 2010 (23.06.-29.08.2010) was set up.

The exhibition at the National Museum of Asian Art Living in Two Times presents the works of two of the most influential figures in the development of photography in late 20th century Iran. Bahman Jalali and his wife and closest collaborator, Rana Javadi, are known for their sharp documentary photographs and disturbing photomontages.

Living in Two Times: Photography by Bahman Jalali and Rana Javadi will run from 6 August 2022 to 8 January 2023 at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art. The exhibition will feature images by the two photographers from their iconic Days of Blood, Days of Fire series, which captures events in Tehran during the 1979 Iranian Revolution, as well as images from Khorramshahr: A City Destroyed and Abadan Fights On, taken by Jalali during his years on the frontlines of the Iran-Iraq war.

A third part of the exhibition presents a selection of images of fishing communities in the northern Persian Gulf.

This is the first museum retrospective in the United States to offer an overview of Jalali's extensive body of work, and the first to be shown alongside a selection of Javadi's work from the late 1970s.
