The concert ECHOES by the Italian-Swiss ensemble CO2, takes a novel journey into the history of an unusual Duo, double bass and flute. The choice is to create a kind of multiple echo between works that were not originally written for this ensemble, like As They Step Into The Same River by Yannis Kyriakides, with other compositions for this combination of instruments, such as, Jodeln Lappone by Fabio Nieder and the new work, composed for music@villaromana 2011, by the Italian composer Silvia Borzelli.
In the second part of the evening, the Night Concert, the stage will be taken by the guitarist Gianluca Gentili, with a personal tribute to Fausto Romitelli, a decisive composer in contemporary music, who described his concept of sound: "At the centre of my composing is the idea of considering sound as a material into which to sink to forge the physical and perceptual characteristics: texture, thickness, porosity, luminosity, density, elasticity. Therefore it is a sound sculpture, instrumental synthesis, anamorphosis, the transformation of spectral morphology, a constant drift towards unsustainable density, distortion, interference, also through the use of electro-acoustic technologies. More and more importance is given to the sonority of non-academic derivation, to the dirty and violent sound mainly of a metal origin and rock and techno music."
The program will be complemented by music by Steve Reich, John Cage, Jacob TV and the same Gentili.

CO2 was founded by Riccarda Caflish and Dario Calderone. The goal of the duo is to explore the possibilities existing between these two extreme instruments, which cover all the audible range, in the attempt of creating an ensemble with limitless possibilities but at the same time minimal. Another goal of the duo is to stimulate the creation of new works, considering the big evolution that these instruments had in the last 50 years. Riccarda Caflisch studied the flute in Bern and continued her training with Wolfgang Schulz in Vienna. In order to deepen her understanding and performance of contemporary music, she completed her studies with Philipe Racine in Zurich and took her Soloist Diploma in 2002. She regularly gives concerts with the ensemble Colegium Novum Zurich, Klangforum Vienna and is member of the Swiss ensemble Ö!. As a soloist she appears with different orchestras as for example Berner Sinfonie Orchester, Camerata Zurich. She has done many Premieres and often works with composers of the young generation. In 2006 she won the promoting prize Eliette von Karajan. Dario Calderone graduated in S. Cecilia Conservatory Rome in 2002 with maximum marks with prof. Massimo Giorgi, and Franco Petracchi. After a period spent in different orchestras as solo double bass, he works now entirely on the music of the last 50 years, studying with Stefano Scodanibbio and Uli Fussenegger. He is member of Ensemble Algoritmo and Ensemble Laboratorium and regularly collaborates with various international ensembles, working in close contact with important composers such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Beat Furrer, George Aperghis, Luis Andriessen and Ivan Fedele. In 2002, he won the Werther Benzi solo double bass competition, and in 2006 the scholarship-prize of the International Music Institute Darmstadt.
Gianluca Gentili focuses, besides his concert activity, on music compositions for theatre, dance, video and film. As tonmeister he recorded in collaboration with artists such as Stefano Scodanibbio, Rohan de Saram, Marino Formenti, Quartetto Arditti und Terry Riley more than twenty discs at important record labels (col legno, mode records, Wergo, New Albion Records, Stradivarius, Brilliant Classics). He is the production director of the Rassegna di Nuova Musica (New Music Festival - Macerata, Italy).
