Postcard from Malindi, ca. 1975

As part of the programme accompanying the exhibition Sarenco L’Africano and the Italo-African Fusion of the 1980s and 1990s this talk will address colonial and post-colonial moments of inter-cultural encounter and their influence on the development of artistic styles in Kenya. Special attention will be paid to the influence that the local art scenes on Kenya’s coast experienced through the growth of mass tourism from the 1970s onward. Not only did new presentation locations and production contexts develop here – including Malindi Artist’s Proof under Sarenco’s direction - lively trade brought contemporary art from East Africa to the attention of Europe, the USA and Asia.
