Durs Grünbein, born in 1962 in Dresden and living in Berlin, is a poet, translator and essayist. In 2009 he is staying at the Villa Massimo in Rome as a scholarship holder.

His books have been translated into several languages. The following works were recently published by Suhrkamp: Vom Schnee oder Descartes in Deutschland (2003), Porzellan. Poem vom Untergang meiner Stadt, (2005), Gedicht und Geheimnis. Aufsätze (2007), Strophen für übermorgen. Gedichte (2007). The following were published by Einaudi in the Italian translations: A metà partita: poesie 1988 – 1999 (1999), Della neve ovvero Cartesio in Germania (2005) – both translated by Anna Maria Carpi – and Il primo anno: appunti berlinesi (2004), translated by Franco Stelzer.

Durs Grünbein has received numerous prizes for his work, including the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1995, the Friedrich-Nietzsche-Preis in 2004, the Friedrich-Hölderlin-Preis in 2005, the Berliner Literaturpreis in 2006 and the international Pier Paolo Pasolini prize in Rome in 2006. He is a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and in the 2009/2010 winter semester he will take over the renowned guest lectureship for poetry at the University of Frankfurt.


He will recite his current poems and prose at Villa Romana. He has written these over the last few months during his stay in Rome. Furthermore he will read passages in German from his books that have been translated into Italian.

The evening will be introduced and presented by Ursula Bavaj, a lecturer of literature at the University of Tuscia, Viterbo.
