Giulio Rovighi

Biography

Giulio Rovighi, born in 1970, was introduced to music at an early age by his grandfather Guido Della Constanza, historical concertmaster at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, highly esteemed by the chief conductor Sergiu Celibidache who considered him a concert performer suited to orchestra. Under his leadership and later under that of his father Luigi Rovighi (known violinist and musicologist), he graduated from the Conservatorio G. B. Martini in Bologna with the highest honours.
He continued his studies with Cristiano Rossi and Dora Schwarzberg, and continued his training with Salvatore Accardo at the Accademia W. Stauffer in Cremona from 1992 to 1999.
In 1994 he was invited by Salvatore Accardo to be a tone judge at the 7th International Stradivari Violin Making Competition in Cremona. After working as an assistant concertmaster for several years with the Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, he worked as a concertmaster with the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, with the Orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, with the Haydn Orchestra and the Orchestra Regionale delle Marche. He has played numerous concerts as a soloist with various orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, with which he performed Paganini's first concerto, and the Italian Chamber Orchestra for which he is often a soloist with Maestro Accardo.
In 2008, he became first violinist of the Prometheus Quartet. With the quartet, he has performed in concerts around the world (in the U.S. at Stanford University and Pacific University, Argentina, Germany, Austria, France, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Japan) and for the major Italian musical seasons such as Società del Quartetto in Milan, Milano Musica, Unione Musicale in Turin, MITO, GOG in Genoa, Musica Insieme Bologna, Amici della Musica in Padua, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Filarmonica Romana, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Festival Sinopoli in Taormina etc.
He has made many recordings. For Amadeus he has recorded the complete quartets of Schumann, for Kairos the complete quartets of Salvatore Sciarrino (the last of which is dedicated to the Prometheus Quartet ), for ECM music by Stefano Scodanibbio, for Brilliant all of Hugo Wolf, and for Limen Music two cd/dvds (Beethoven, Schubert and Fedele).
In 2012 the Prometheus Quartet was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale.
In parallel to playing concerts, he also teaches. Winner of the National Competition of the Ministry of Education, since 1994 he has been teaching the violin, and currently teaches at the Conservatorio Respighi in Latina.
He plays one instrument made by Goffredo Cappa (Cremona 1682) and another made by Carlo Tononi (Bologna 1754).
