We are very pleased to welcome the Syrian artist Rula Ali from May 10 to July 4 as international guest artist at the Villa Romana.

Rula Ali, born in 1981 in Qamishli, studied English Literature at the University of Damascus and sculpture at Walid Ezzat Institute. Before the war in Syria, she has participated in several group exhibitions in Qamishli and in the Damascus International Symposium. When the uprising started, she worked for two years for the website 'Syria Untold', archiving the creative resistance and civil movement in Syria. Last year she was assistant curator in organizing the Imago Mundi exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Rula Ali has been living one and a half year in Berlin and exhibited during the Gallery Weekend in Berlin at the international Kulturzentrum Novilla. Her artistic practice - initially due to a lack of working space - become in Germany focused on textile objects and embroidery, with references to Syrian Folk art.

During her residency period at the Villa Romana Rula Ali will give a lecture.
