Villa Romana commits to act discreetly, responsibly, and respectfully while communicating with others and expects everyone – including its own staff – to be alert towards recognising any unjust act and behaviour and to help such incidents to be brought to its attention. Villa Romana commits to continuously engage with the possibility of implementing policies of reciprocity and of co-habitation for all members of Villa Romana and the third parties that Villa Romana collaborates with. Villa Romana holds zero tolerance for the following behaviours:
Harassment is a set of behaviours that are belittling, hostile, dishonouring, or offensive and include (but are not limited to): Epithets, insults, remarks, jokes, exclusion, or innuendos related to a person's race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, gender expression, sex, disability, sexual orientation, creed, age, or any other ground. Posting or circulating offensive pictures, graffiti, or materials, whether in print form or via e-mail or other electronic means. Unjust treatment due to abuse of power. Unwanted physical contact.
Sexual misconduct is defined as unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature that is committed without consent or by force, intimidation, coercion, or manipulation. This behaviour includes (but is not limited to): Non-consensual physical contact including patting, pinching, stroking, kissing, hugging, fondling, touching. Unwelcome commentary (both verbal and written) on appearance, age, private life, sexual comments including stories, jokes and insults. Non-verbal behaviours such as physical intimidation, indecent exposure, sexual gesturing, whistling and leering. Unwelcome sexual advances, including repeated and unsolicited social invitations and requests (both verbal and written) for dates or physical intimacy. Sexual coercion: the use of job-related threats or rewards to solicit sexual favours.
In case of being notified of an act of discrimination or harassment, Villa Romana will act decisively, initiating measures that protect personal privacy for all involved. The institution will justly address any reported breaches in conduct and support victims who require further legal, criminal, or psychological assistance. Villa Romana commits to sustain a mechanism through which the victim of discrimination or harassment can reach out to designated persons within the team, supporting a horizontality of care and the possibility of peer-to-peer help. A member of the board of Villa Romana is also always available for any complaint. The designated person is currently artist Shannon Bool (write to: shannon@villaromana.org). After being notified of a complaint, Bool will take discreet measures to support the complainant, to initiate measures with the Villa Romana Board and to assist in referring the complainant to external agencies in the case of criminal complaints.
