On Friday, September 18 at 6:30 PM, Villa Romana presents the book Villa Romana, with a conversation featuring the volume’s curators Elena Agudio and Carlotta Castellani, in dialogue with Mistura Allison (Villa Romana), Costanza Caraffa (Phototeca of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence), and Justin Randolph Thompson (The Recovery Plan).
The volume retraces 120 years of Villa Romana, one of Europe’s longest-running and most historically significant artist residencies. Founded in 1905 by Max Klinger, Villa Romana is a German cultural institution based in Florence that has supported artistic production and hosted recipients of the Villa Romana Prize for more than a century.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition CENTOVENTI: Villa Romana 1905–2025 at Museo Novecento in Florence, the book expands and deepens the exhibition’s research in editorial form. Through critical essays, archival materials, documents, and images gathered during a three-year research project conducted in collaboration with the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, Department of Humanities, the publication explores the history of the artists’ house as a laboratory for experimentation, a space of cohabitation, and a site of encounter across generations and diverse cultural contexts.
Following the book presentation, the world premiere of the short film Intizar (2026) by Villa Romana Fellow 2026 Gülbin Ünlü will be screened.
